This quilt was made to celebrate Soniya and Vam's beautiful destination Colorado Rockies wedding.
The wedding invitation with all its multiday celebrations were photo transferred to fabric and then cut out in the shape of large hearts. The quilt makes note of their courtship from first date to engagement to the marriage ceremony.
The red hearts signify the meaning of Saptapadi…each of the seven steps around the sacred fire during the Hindu marriage ceremony when they exchange garlands of flowers and take 7 steps, Saptapadi encircling the fire, and each step represents a vow.
Step 1: May the ...

read moreA flash of inspiration birthed this quilt. It celebrates the wedding of two of my daughter's super super good friends.
They married last fall with a destination wedding in Italy, a gorgeous setting. This quilt is my rendition of a photo taken on The Day.
The inspiration continued throughout the design and construction. Having decided on the layout, and enlarged and traced the photo, I had my pattern.
Then I started choosing the fabrics. The right ones just flew into my hands. I made only one edit!
That's a pretty good omen, don't you think?

read moreThe spring has been good to us. We got some very lovely quilts in that I know you are going to love. I wish I could show them all to you, but that would make for a very long post. We got in a number of modern quilts as well as a Dresden plate and a simple, but not simple, block quilt. You’ll understand what I mean in a minute. I think you’ll also see why April renters bring May admirers. Because I know I am an admirer!

I love a dated quilt. I love a dated quilt with a family story (see full story below). Combined together....well.... it's simply grand.
The fabrics have some preservation issues and staining throughout. And at some point, a critter chewed a hole in the quilt and almost chewed a second. The good part of that story is that the critter was polite enough to avoid chewing up any of the embroidered history.

I patched both places. Here's one.
I patched the damaged black squares with an antique fabric (with white swirl print). And I put on ...
We, too, took advantage of the sunshine and visited three forest preserves (Old School Van Patten Woods Des Plaines River canoe launch (the latter has a trail along the river)) and Hosah Park (Zion's piece of the lakefront, wedged between the north and south units of Illinois Beach State Park).
Purple coneflower, lady fern, common reed. Sumac, woodland sunflower. Purple loosestrife with a bumble bee, burdock in flower (a little ...

Rabbit, rabbit! Yes, I remembered to say that first thing this morning.
Our afternoon outings this week took us to two units of Illinois Beach State Park and to two forest preserves (Pine Dunes and Grant Woods). The wildflowers are stunning. I know they've always been there but I am really alert to them this year as I've taken 'destination' walks (rather than just in the neighborhood). The Picture This app on my phone makes identification easy.

My stated goal was to get started on the wedding quilt. In a way I have achieved that because I did get started, but now I'm determined to get the top completed. I might be there had I not made design changes along the way.
I made half the units for 40 border blocks using all-the-same fabrics. Before I added the large triangles I got to thinking.
Design change: since the blocks themselves are scrappy (each of the four birds-in-the-air blocks has a different ... read more(Left: though this is specifically AAUW, it's representative of the other groups I'm in. Sitting next to one another in someone's living room after a potluck dinner!)

read moreI began a quilt for my nephew & his wife on the day they were married. I placed 2-1/2 X 5 inch muslin strips backed with freezer paper onto a table at the reception and invited guests to sign their name in the center. Some guests drew photos while others wrote messages. I collected 52 […]

I need 100 Birds in the Air blocks for the wedding quilt. They'll be assembled in 25 sets of four -- 13 of one color and 12 of the other. That means 52 + 48 individual blocks. Each cutting creates two blocks so I just used each of the blue prints until I'd used them all -- more than 52, I'm sure. I'm now working on the greens.
(Confession: I went fabric shopping to get more greens.)

How cool is this? My town is on commercially-printed quilt fabric!
It's BasicGrey "Compositions" for Moda. I bought it because of the soft gray-on gray color and because I like text prints. When I took it out to cut into it I took a moment to read it.
The map image shows the railway depots north and northwest of Chicago. Winthrop Harbor is the farthest northeast. The vertical white lines are part of the fabric design. My guess is that it's pre-WWI. There are some stations that aren't towns (e.g. Ontarioville, now part of Hanover Park ...

read moreA few weeks ago we went to a wedding. Yes, we're lucky in New Zealand and we're allowed to have weddings and dancing.
I decided to make a quilt for the happy couple. I showed them four different options and asked what colours they like. They chose the Donuts quilt designed by Amanda Jean Nyberg from her book No Scraps left Behind. You may know Amanda Jean from her long running blog Crazy Mom Quilts.
As for colours - it didn't really matter because the bride and groom had chosen a pattern with lots of colours in it ...

Hooray! The wedding quilt is assembled!
It's BIG -- 96 x 96. 12-1/2 yards by weight.
The border closeup I posted on Monday showed the flying geese framed by a strip of gray-on-white. I didn't think that all-the-same inner and outer borders played well with the varied backgrounds of the blocks and of the geese.
I cut many, many gray/white strips and pieced them into 5's. (Why 5's and not 6's? No reason.) I sewed two 5's together and then sewed those units in long strips. It was easier and more accurate to ... read more
